GRWM: the “I need to look smart AND feel calm” outfit

Time really flies because somehow it’s already presentation season again… and I swear the outfit stress hits before the slides are even finished 😅 If you’re prepping for a senior capstone, a research presentation, or any “panel of judges” moment, the goal is simple: look polished, feel comfortable, and walk in like you belong there.

I’m writing this like a real get-dressed-with-me because that’s exactly how it feels: standing in front of the mirror, switching tops, questioning jeans, and trying to predict whether I’ll be standing for 20 minutes or 2 hours. The outfit matters, but mostly because it affects how confident I feel when I’m speaking.

Step 1: Pick the vibe (aesthetic) before picking the clothes

When I’m stuck, I stop thinking “What should I wear?” and start thinking “What vibe do I want to give?” For presentations, I rotate between four main aesthetics (and yes, these are the exact categories I always debate):

Jeans can work if they’re dark wash, no rips, no distressing, and the rest of the outfit is elevated (structured jacket, clean shoes, minimal accessories). But if I’m presenting to a panel, defending research, or being photographed while speaking… I personally don’t want my outfit to be the thing that reads “casual day.”

So if you’re torn: trousers are the easiest yes. They photograph better, they move better, and they instantly say “professional” without trying too hard.

Two-piece (jacket + trousers or matching set): This is the safest for a formal setting. It also lets me adjust layers if I get hot. If the room is cold, I keep the jacket on. If I’m overheating, I can remove it and still look professional.

Jumpsuit: A jumpsuit can look extremely sleek and “put together,” especially for a research presentation where I want to look modern and confident. The only downside is practicality—bathroom breaks become a whole event, and if the jumpsuit fit is even slightly off in the torso, it can get uncomfortable fast.

If I’m presenting in front of judges and I want maximum control: I pick the two-piece. If it’s a less formal room and I want a clean one-and-done look: jumpsuit wins.

Business formal vs business casual: how I decide in 10 seconds

When I’m unsure, I ask myself one question: Will anyone in the room be wearing a suit?

If yes (or maybe), I lean business formal: trousers + structured jacket + polished shoes.

If no, I can soften it into business casual: knit top + trousers, maybe skip the jacket, or wear a softer jacket instead of a sharp blazer.

Either way, I keep the silhouette clean and the colors calm. For presentations, I like neutrals because they don’t distract from my face or my slides.

This is so real because the second someone starts taking photos, I suddenly care about every angle 😭 If there’s even a chance photos will happen (class, professor, department socials, family), I plan for it:
